WEEKLY REQUIRED WORK

These are time sensitive. You do not receive credit if you write them after the deadline each week.

First, there's a blog entry (about 250 words) which will have you respond to a hopefully thought-provoking question. Each week, you must do the blog entry with enough time left in the week to be able to enter into dialogue online with your classmates. Write, reply, write more, reply more, and then write and reply more.

Second, there's a reading. There’s no blog entry associated with this. Just read.

Third, there's a written response to the reading. Your reading and writing on the blog must be completed by the SATURDAY (by midnight) of the week in which the reading falls. This entry should be a long paragraph. YOU DO NOT NEED TO RESPOND TO OTHER STUDENTS' PART THREE EACH WEEK.

Monday, March 23, 2015

WEEK ONE BLOG ENTRY (a reminder, in this section, you need to write your 250 word blog entry AND respond to two classmates)

Introduce yourself to the class.

You might consider some of the following questions: where are you from? What is your major?
Why are you taking an online course?
What is your favorite book?
What is your favorite food?
What is the farthest you have traveled from home?
What did you do over Winter Break?

Respond to any of these questions or anything else to tell us about yourself.

THEN, AFTER OTHERS HAVE RESPONDED, COME BACK TO THE BLOG AND RESPOND TO THEIR POSTS.

Remember, you may not wait until Saturday to do these posts. If you do that, you will not receive credit. The reason for that is that the blog is supposed to get you to write, read, write, in a community with others in our class. If you wait until Saturday, you are basically just writing to yourself. No one will really read what you write or respond to it--so write during the week.

  1. Hi. My name is Jessica Fletcher (no relation to the lady from “Murder, She Wrote”—did I just age myself?) and I was born and raised here in Bakersfield. My major is Liberal Studies. I am in the IBEST program working on my BA and Multiple Subject teaching credential. I am taking this online course to free up my schedule, so I can substitute teach during the day. It’s hard for me to nail down a favorite author or food because I love all kinds of books and all kinds of food! I am a wife and a mother of two boys, ages 1o and 14, and a 5 year old English Bulldog named Bugsy. I don’t remember what I did for Winter Break—it seems so long ago and since today is the first day of Spring Break, I guess I’ll be working on assignments early, substitute teaching and spring cleaning for Spring Break. Since that sounds boring, I’ll tell you all what I did LAST Spring Break: My husband took our family on a cruise and we had so much fun! My younger son always finds teenage “girlfriends” to hang out with and my older son played a lot of ping pong (he’s really good). My husband and I relaxed on the back of the boat with cold beverages. While we were away, my niece house sat and dog sat Bugsy. Apparently she had more fun than we did because the house was a mess and I had more recyclables than beer left in the fridge. I look forward to meeting new people in the class and I like writing, so I look forward to that too!

    1. Hell Jessica! My name is Maritsa Torres and I was wondering, how is substituting? I just took my CBEST and got the results and passed! Now, I'm a little nervous of becoming a substitute because I do not know what to expect. Any advice??

      Delete
    2. Congrats on passing the CBEST and getting your sub certificate! I love subbing! Well, I sub at two schools I am familiar with, so this gives me an advantage. One of the schools I work at I have already had the opportunity to develop positive relationships with students and they know me. This is an ideal situation and the day goes pretty smooth. The other school I work at, the students don't know me very well and sometimes it can be challenging for all of us! The advice I would give is to be fair, firm and consistent with the students. When you want them to do something, look for a student that is doing exactly what you want them to do and thank them. It's amazing to see how many students follow (this works well with the younger ones). If you have any specific questions, I would be more than happy to answer them if I can.

      Delete
    3. Thank you for the advice! I just do not want to be a substitute that does not interact with the students because I seen many that just sit and play games on their phone.
I think I might have trouble with being firm because of my size. When I went to observe a high school for my math class, many students believed I was a new student at their school. I feel the students will not take me seriously.

  2. My name is Alianna and I was born here in Bakersfield. I have lived my entire life here and I am eager to move away to see other places. I am a Nursing major and being a nurse is something that I have wanted to do for a long time. I have chosen to take an online course since I enjoy the convenience of being able to do the classwork in the comfort of my home. Plus, it allows me to have a much more flexible schedule. My favorite book is actually a series of books called The Earth's Children Series, by Jean M. Auel. The Clan of the Cave Bear is the first book of the series and it is what got me hooked. My favorite food would probably have to be Chinese. The farthest that I have traveled from my home is to Las Vegas, Nevada. I don't recall much of what I did over Winter Break, but I do remember spending time with my family and going to my little cousin's Christmas dance rehearsal. Over Spring Break I had oral surgery to remove my wisdom teeth and that was pretty interesting. I was so nervous leading up to the day of my surgery. I was more concerned about being under anesthesia than the actual surgery itself. I had this fear that I wouldn't be able to wake up. Everything went very smoothly and I had no problems afterward. I'm glad it's all over though and I wouldn't want to go through it again!

    1. You're lucky Alianna, my mom thought it would be funny to record me waking up from anesthesia and then sharing it with everyone in my family. I dont have a small family... Also Im a big reader so if you could recommend some 'cant put down' books that would be great!

      Delete
    2. Well it so happens that my mom actually did record me coming out of the anesthesia! She showed it to me the next day and it was hilarious! She hasn't shared it with anyone yet though! I found that the Earth's Children series had a 'can't put down' feeling, but it also depends on what your interests are. I like historical novels and so those suited me well. What are you interested in?

      Delete
    3. Hi Alianna, what do you want to specialize in? I used to be a nursing major too, but I switched to PEAK about a year ago because I felt nursing was too fast paced for me. I recently had my wisdom teeth removed as well, but I was too scared to go under general anesthesia so I got local anesthesia instead. I was really nervous because everyone told me that it was going to be painful but it wasn't that bad.

      Delete
    4. Oh no!! It's the worst when you think you can trust your mom and then she does this to you!! Yea I don't have anything specific that I'm I retested in I will literally ready anything so thank you for the suggestion! I did enjoy the Harry Potter books and my friend bought me the Lord of the Rings books so now I have to read those! I guess with those ill be good for the rest of the quarter! (Lol)

      Delete
    5. Oh my god! I had my wisdom teeth removed a couple years back! I completely understand your fear, I was the same except more concerned of the needle. My mom would've recorded me also, good thing she didn't take me.

      Delete
    6. Wow, I had my wisdom teeth removed a few years ago and my definite fear was embarrassing myself. Of course, it didn't help that I spent the day before watching embarrassing wisdom teeth removal videos. Thank God nobody ever recorded me because apparently I turn into a parrot when under anesthesia. I pretty much mimicked everybody around me, which my brother took advantage of by having me say 'boo-yah' for a good two hours.

      Delete
    7. Hi Alianna, getting your wisdom tooth was probably frightening for you. I remember when I had my wisdom teeth pulled out they did not put me under. Instead the dentist numbed my mouth. Oh geez, the FIRT visit was frightening for me as well. I wanted to go under so bad, but German dentists usually do the best they can to do otherwise. I got to see exactly how they pulled my wisdom tooth out because of the wall size mirror that was in front of me showed me everything as well as the reflection in his glasses. The first visit I had both my lower wisdom teeth pulled. The second visit, I had both my upper wisdom teeth pulled out. However, I had more coming through which caused me to go back for the third time this time it were only the bottom left and top right. I swear I must have been a shark in my past life with all those wisdom teeth I had.

  3. " I had more recyclables than beer left in the fridge..." Great line, Jessica, and nice to meet you!
Aliana, Las Vegas is the farthest you have traveled from home? You should buy tickets to Europe right now. Class, shall we pay for it together? That might be a hard sell, but at least we tried. Welcome to the course!

  4. Hello everyone! My name is Crystal Villatoro and I am a Criminal Justice major with a minor in Public Administration. My favorite food is any meal that is prepared at home, I like to cook as much as I can! I am taking online courses so I could home more, due to my mom being sick the last couple of quarters and it just makes it easier for me to be here and help her as much as I can. I have traveled as far as to Seattle last winter break as well as Colorado, I actually plan on returning back to Colorado at the end of this quarter. Over winter break, I worked most of it and spent time with my family from out of town, my brother who is in the military was fortunate enough to spend the holiday season with us. I recently enjoyed a Everything Burns by Vincent Zandri, which is a good read, but my all time favorite has to the Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events it was the first books that got me really going with reading for some odd reason.

  5. Hello everyone, my name is Brooke Meister and I am 22 years old. I was born and raised in Bakersfield and my major is education. I am taking an online course because I work two jobs and it was really difficult trying to make a schedule around both of them. I work at an elementary school Monday-Friday and I work nights at Frugatti’s. I took all online classes at Taft for the last 2 years and took a lot of online classes while I was at Arizona State my first year out of high school. I absolutely love to read and James Patterson is my favorite author with Stephen King coming in at a close second. Mystery/crime novels are my favorite! Even though I work at an Italian restaurant Mexican food is my favorite. New York is the farthest that I have been from home and it is one of my favorite places to visit. I also take trips to Tennessee often because my oldest sister lives there. I actually got a really long winter break because I was waiting on being accepted to CSUB. I took classes at Taft in the fall and by the time I got my grades in it was too late to get registered for classes for winter quarter. Since I have been out of school for the last 3 months I have been working about 35 hours a week at the restaurant, so not much vacation here. And right now I am on Spring Break from work at the elementary school, but started school so not much Spring Break either! Summer vacation please hurry! I am not a great writer so I am excited to learn how to make my writing better.

So sorry to hear about missing winter quarter, but welcome to CSUB!

    2. Hi Brooke,
Your schedule sounds very similar to mine. I also work two jobs, and I work for an elementary school as well. I need summer break to get here as well!

    3. I worked 4 days as a sub on our Spring Break, and this week is their Spring Break and I have classes too! Brooke, I haven't eaten there in a long time. My favorite was the seafood ravioli.

    4. Maritsa - I would probably choose Tennessee. It is much more laid back than New York and I love to spend time with my sister when I am there. I will be going back in July so I am very excited about that!
Jasmine - What school do you work at? And where else are you working?
Jessica - My favorite would probably be the Americano Burger (which is a weird pick for an Italian restaurant, but it's so good!!!) or the Theresa's Tortellini. I'm still in the process of trying more things off the menu since I am such a picky eater.

  6. Hello everyone! My name is Maritsa Torres and I am 20 years old. I was born in Bakersfield, but raised in a little town called Shafter. Shafter is about 25 minutes away from CSUB and many people come to Shafter to take photographs in the almond orchards (engagement photos, family photos, YADA YADA). Anyways, my major is teaching mathematics. I know right, why pick math?! Well, math is a subject that comes easily to me. In a few years, I see myself in a high school classroom, teaching Algebra, Algebra 2, and Geometry. I am taking this online course because I don't feel confident in my writing skills to take the GWAR test. I do not like the feeling of failing an important writing test, so taking this GWAR online class will help me improve my writing skills and confidence in writing. My favorite book is "Night" by Elie Wiesel because I am intrigued by Elie's hardships. My favorite food is pizza. I think I can eat pizza for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Well, maybe just once a week. The farthest I traveled from home was the Big Island. Over winter break, I went to Kailua-Kona, Hawaii with my sister. I enjoyed this trip because it was my first vacation out of the Motherland with my sister. Also, this was my first vacation away from my parents.

    5. I love math too. I've been thinking about minoring in it. It is definitely a subject that is easier for me than others and I struggle in english and writing as well! I think that's how it is for most people. If they are strong in math then they aren't as strong in english and vice versa. I have always wanted to visit Hawaii. It's on my bucket list!

  8. Hello everyone! My name is Graciela Patricia Ruezga but everyone calls me Gracie. I’m originally from Orange County. At the age of twelve, my family and I moved to Lamont and lived there for four years. Then we moved to Fresno and stayed there four years as well. And huge surprise! We moved back to Lamont and we have been there for the past two years. I am currently a PEAK major and my concentration is in exercise science. I hope to graduate from CSUB Spring 2016 and then I am off to grad school. An online course appealed to me because I can complete the assignments anywhere and at any time. Since I was in the second grade my favorites books have been the Harry Potter series. I remember I would beg my mom to take me to Barnes and Nobles at midnight so I could get the new Harry Potter book. I would be so excited and would start reading the books as soon as I got my hands on them. I would read all day and all night until I finished. Needless to say, I am still obsessed with the Harry Potter books and reread them whenever I get the chance. Changing the subject, my favorite food is Mexican food. My dad makes the best pozole, tacos, burritos, you name it. To my family it is just food because that is what we cook at home. The farthest I have been from home is Jalisco, Mexico. When people ask me where I would like to travel I always say Mexico. Aside from having family there, Mexico has a lot of interesting places to visit. Every time my family and I go to Mexico, we set aside a few days to go to a different state in Mexico and go site seeing. It is an amazing feeling to stand where history was made. I got chills during our visit to the pyramids in Tenochtitlan. During winter break I didn’t do much. I just visited family and spent time with friends.

    2. Yay for fellow Harry Potter fans!!! I love that book series although I read it a lot latter than most people. Although the book series because popular when I was in elementary school I didn't actually read the series until my senior year of high school, which is really sad. It took me until the last movie was about to come out for me to get my butt in gear and actually read all seven books, which I finished one after another. They are amazing books and I regret not reading them when I was younger. Anyways, Mexico sounds amazing! I always wanted to visit the places that the Mayan's once ruled. I'm a huge history nerd so that always seemed like such an amazing place to check out. Anyways, It is so nice to meet you and I look forward to working with you more this quarter! :D

    3. Alianna, I love reading too but since starting college I haven’t had time to read for fun. Hopefully I can read a novel soon. The pyramids are awesome, but they are hard to climb because they are steep!

    4. Stephanie, I actually did not watch all the movies until a couple months ago. I bought the DVD box set and watched all the Harry Potter movies during winter break. I didn’t really like the last two movies because they were missing a lot of events that happened in the book. What topic in history would you like to learn more about?

    5. Hey Gracie! I think I've had you in a couple of my classes in the PEAK courses! I love the fact that you're a Harry Potter fanatic! Mexico sounds great and I know that I've consumed lots of Mexican dishes from restaurants, but I would love to try real authentic Mexican food.

  10. Hi everyone!!! My name is Lizeth I am a Human Biological Science Major. I know it sounds hard but it’s not all that bad, it’s really cool what the body can do and also gross. I was born in Bakersfield but I was raised in Wasco (used to be the flower capital!… it’s not anymore:/). I am taking this course to help with my writing skills, and also because I needed units. I also did not realize it was an online course until I got an email saying it was, imagine my surprise and satisfaction. Well I don’t have a particular favorite book but I did just order a book on amazon called The Coming Plague; my professor mentioned it in class and said it was a very good read, and now I am waiting by my mailbox for that book to come in. I am really excited!!! Oh but if you have not read the divergent series I recommend those books to everyone! I have traveled to a few places all in the United States like Alaska, New York, and Hawaii. I have been to other states but these were by far top three. I went on a cruise in Alaska and it was absolutely beautiful, it really is the last frontier. Last summer I worked as a camp counselor for 2 ½ months in Pennsylvania as their softball instructor, and then I spontaneously stayed in New York and did some traveling there with friends I met at camp!

  11. Hello, my name is Karla Guzman and I’m from Delano, CA. I’m 25 years old. I’m the mother of a 9 year old son and I’m expecting a daughter in late July. This is my third quarter at CSUB and so far I love it. I like the professors and the atmosphere, but most of all I like the quarter system. I’m majoring in Liberal Studies with hopes of becoming an elementary school teacher, preferably third grade. I work full time at a school district as a Middle School Principal’s secretary. I chose to take this course online because my job doesn’t allow me to take day courses and I’m limited on the courses I can take in the evening. I also enjoy online classes because I can work on the readings and PowerPoint outlines at my own pace. I would have to say that my favorite book is “The Alchemist” by Paulo Coelho. This book I read it a year ago and I found it very interesting, filled with truths. I don’t read as much as I should, but when someone recommends a good book I do try to read it. My favorite food hands down is Pizza and Enchiladas. I can live on those two foods and never get tired of it. I did a little bit of traveling this Winter Vacation. My family and I went to San Francisco for a week and Washington State for another two weeks. I was in Anaheim with family for New Year’s Eve and I finished off my vacation on a cruise to Ensenada with a few of my coworkers. The furthest I’ve traveled to is Nayarit, Mexico. It’s a two hour plane ride or a 2 day bus ride. I haven’t traveled to any other countries or Eastern States in the United States, but I hope to do some more traveling soon

  12. Hello all,
My name is Jasmine Martinez, and I am a junior at CSUB. I was born in Los Angeles, but I was raised in Bakersfield. My major is Child Development, and I hope to be a daycare director someday. One of my favorite books is Esperanza Rising, this has been my favorite book since the second grade. I checked this book out every year for six years, while I was in grade school. Every time I read this book, I feel as if I am reading for the first time. I wish I had more time to read, but my time is occupied with school and work. My current favorite author is Nicholas Sparks. I like to use my breaks to delve into a good book, over winter break I read Safe Haven by Nicholas Sparks. My current favorite food is sushi, I can eat sushi all day. The farthest I have traveled from home is to Lake Tahoe. I do not like airplanes therefore traveling far is very limited. I am more of a road trip kind of girl. I hope to someday get over the fear of airplanes because I would love to see the rest of the world. I am very interested in traveling to North Carolina someday. Most of the Nicholas Sparks books are set in North Carolina, and when I read I can’t help but fantasize how beautiful it is there. Anyways, I hope you all have a great quarter, and just remember summer is around the corner!

    4. Hi Jasmine. I read your post and thought "noo... she mentioned sushi" haha. I absolutely love sushi but can't eat it since I'm pregnant and that's on my list of must eat foods as soon as I have my baby. Don't be scared of traveling via airplanes. I used to be terrified and told myself I would never do it. One year I needed to go to Mexico with my family so I built up the courage to purchase a ticket. Well, as I waited in the airport I kept contemplating on boarding the plane. I finally did it and guess what? It wasn't bad at all. It felt a little weird at first but it's nothing more than a bus ride. This weekend I flew for the second time to Mexico again and although it was a bit scary still, I wasn't as nervous. Once you conquer your fears, the possibilities are endless. Hope you have a great quarter. best of luck

  13. Hello everyone! My name is Cinthia Hernandez and I am 20 years old and this is my third year at CSUB. I am a Psychology major with a minor in Child, Family and Adolescents Studies (CAFS). I currently live in Delano, CA and have lived here since I was about 5 months old. I was born in Loma Linda, CA and lived in Fontana when I was born but my parents decided to move here to Delano to be closer to my mother’s family. I remember living with my grandmother and my aunts and uncles for a while when I was about 4 years old, then when my little sister was born we moved into a new house. We have lived here for almost 16 years now and I know that because my sister will be 16 years old in June. I currently work at Tutti Frutti here in Delano. For those that don’t know what Tutti Frutti is, it is a frozen yogurt shop. I started working there when it opened last year in late July. This is my first job and I love it. I especially love getting a free yogurt when I work because it is amazingly delicious! I love ice cream, frozen yogurt, shaved ice or iced coffee anytime of the year. I am that crazy person that will eat ice cream when it is freezing cold outside. I do not have a favorite food; I enjoy many foods and love trying new foods. I keep thinking if I had to just pick one, what would it be? But I can’t seem to pick one because food is delicious! I however do know a food I do not like. I’ve tried sushi so many times and I still can’t seem to like it. My boyfriend has taken me to different places and I still don’t like it. He loves sushi and wants me to like it too but I just don’t. When I am not eating, doing school work or working at Tutti Frutti I am most likely coaching. I am cheerleading coach for a middle school here in town. It is something that I enjoy and have fun with because not only do I get to work with children but I get to teach them fun new cheers and dances. I love working with children and hope to work with them in the future. I also enjoy dancing, I’ve danced for about 13 years and then I did cheer in high school and one year at CSUB my freshman year. Dancing is a way for me to let out my emotions and release any stress that I have. I am really looking forward to this course and look forward to learning with you all!

    1. Hi Cinthia, I can relate to your love for frozen yogurt and ice cream. It can be snowing outside and I still will go get some ice cream! Since you love trying new foods, is there a restaurant here in town you would recommend? It is great that you enjoy your job at Tutti Frutti and at the middle school. You are very lucky to have jobs you love!

    2. Hi Cinthia! I don't know if you remember me but I remember seeing you cheer in high school. Also, i use to manage the boys tennis team in Delano High School where your boyfriend had played. It's great to see someone familiar here. I admire you as a dancer. I think that's really awesome!

    3. Hi Cinthia!! I'm also from Delano and work at a middle school. How awesome that we have a few people from Delano enrolled in this course. I've only been to the Tutti Frutti in Delano once and the staff was so friendly. My friend Randy coaches the CAMS cheer squad and he always tries to teach me cheers, but I can't dance to save my life. I have no moves haha. So, you're very fortunate (and hardworking) to be able to cheer at a college level. Best of luck this quarter.

  14. Hi I’m Marina Kennelty. I am a CAFS major with a minor in Sociology. I also have my AA in psychology. I was born and raised in Bakersfield. I’m married with three children, ages 8, 5, and 1. My husband and I currently have two businesses that we run together. In my free time I love to do photography. That is my true passion and I plan to take it up as a full time career when I get older. In the mean time tho, I want to be an adolescent counselor. I feel they get over looked and are misunderstood. I want to be their push/light towards college and careers. I enjoy taking online classes because it lets me work around everything else going on in my life. I have taken a few online courses before this class, so it’s nothing new to me. I plan to graduate next winter and I’m so excited because I made myself go back to college and finish after having children. A lot of people think I’m crazy for being a full time student, mother, and wife, but I see it as all the more reason to make the most out of my life. I have the potential and determination to not let it slip through my fingers like I did when I was younger. I am in my thirties so it’s now or never, just kidding. I wish all of you the best of luck in this course and look forward to talking to everyone online.

    1. Hi Marina! It is nice to meet you. I too wish to be an adolescent counselor . I agree with you that they are misunderstood and they need someone to be there to hear them out and guide them in the right path. I am sure you will be an excellent adolescent counselor.
Photography sounds fun. Is there certain things you like to capture? Or do you capture anything you like?

    2. Hi Cinthia! Nice to meet you as well. Oh awesome! I think a lot of people frown upon working with adolescents since they tend to be challenging. You will be great at it too! It seems like there needs to more of us haha. I love love photography! I capture anything that catches my eye. I'm not so good at actual portraits, but I love capturing those raw moments that are priceless.

I'm Marina too! haha it's not too often that you meet someone with our name so I thought I would drop in and say hello :) But you should definitely be proud of yourself and what you are doing for your family. I'm sure you children will have no problem using you as an example of hard work and determination! Good luck this quarter!

  15. Hello everyone, my name is Stephanie Dorowsky!! I am a Liberal Studies major on the IBEST track. I am currently working on my BA and this is my very first quarter here at CSUB, so I am a little nervous and excited. I am 22 years old and hope to be able to work as a kindergarden or first grade teacher in the future. I was born in Lancaster but I live in Palmdale and work at the movie theater. I also spend a lot of time volunteering at Valley View Elementary in a kindergarden and first grade class rooms. I am currently taking online courses because it allows me to work more hours and volunteer more, although this is my first time taking these kinds of courses. My favorite book is a book I read when I was younger called "Dash and Lily''s Book of Dares' by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan. My favorite author on the other hand is Rick Riordan because of his writing involving mythology, something I have a big interest in. Although it is not the healthiest option, my favorite food is pizza. The farthest I have ever been from home would be either to New York or Florida. I spent my winter break working, volunteering, and going to Disneyland. I have an annual pass so I spend a lot of my free time there whenever I can. That is pretty much me in a nutshell. I love writing and making new friends so I really look forward to getting to know and work with you all on here. I wish everyone a lot of luck this quarter!!

I have been wanting to get an annual pass to Disneyland. I love Disneyland and have not been there in awhile. I think it is awesome you go whenever you have time. I know I would if I had an annual pass

I am in a sorority and we are involved in many community events on campus as well as off campus. This is the third time that I take an online class. They are not bad. All you have to do is keep up with the work. I LOVE Disneyland! I have been thinking about getting the annual pass because just one trip alone is real pricey. I wish you the best of luck this quarter as well!

    5. HI Stephanie, welcome to CSUB!! This is my third quarter here and I still feel fairly new at it all, but everyone has made the transition from Bakersfield College to CSUB easy. Everyone here is very helpful and the classes have been wonderful. I'm sure you'll love it. Best of luck. I also LOVE pizza... I never get tired of it although like you say, it's not healthy. I love going to Disneyland as well, but I only get to go about once every other year. My boyfriend's parents live very close to Disneyland, so whenever I'm there I get to see the fireworks at night :)

  17. Good morning everyone,
My name is Jessica Crow and I was born here in Bakersfield but I was raised in a small town called Caliente which is about an hour outside of Bakersfield. My major is Liberal Studies and i am a third year standing. The reason I am taking this online course is because it frees up mu schedule a little bit so I can work. I am also taking this course because I took Professor Schmoll in a different class and LOVED it! I work at Pier 1 Imports and I have been there for almost three years now. I would have to say my favorite book is Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austin. I was lucky to receive a antique copy last year for Christmas from my dad. I could not tell you what my favorite food it because it constantly changing depending on my mood but i absolutely love nacho cheese and guacamole. The farthest i have been from home is Missouri three years ago and i did not enjoy it very much because the humidity was terrible. For Winter Break i went to my favorite place in the world which is my home town with my mom and her side of the family where I got to ride horses and spend time with my younger cousins.

  20. Hello Everyone!
My name is Marina Arias, I am a Biology major and am scheduled to graduate this upcoming this June! I am super excited to graduate and begin looking for a career. I will also be getting married this Summer which I'm even more ecstatic about. I mean who wouldn't want to marry their best friend?! Haha
I was born and raised in Bakersfield, and although it has been a love hate relationship I have enjoyed it for the most part. I am a transfer from Bakersfield College where is played on the Women's Soccer Team for 2 years. Playing for BC was probably one of the funnest things I could have done...but may also explain why I'm a 5th year senior! Hahaha But I wouldn't trade the experiences I gained for anything!
I would have to say that my favorite food is pizza! I could have pizza for breakfast, lunch, and dinner! It's so yummy!
My fiancee and I have 2 dogs that we absolutely adore and their names are Penny and Link (Yes as in the Zelda video game, per my fiancee). We enjoy spending time with them and taking them to the dog park.
The furthest I have traveled form home was actually this past Summer when I went with the Global Medical Brigade of CSUB and traveled to Panama to give medical and dental care to a remote tribal community. We aided over 300 people in just 3 days of clinic. It was definitely a learning experience and an eye opener.
But anyway...I'm excited to get this quarter started because it's what stands between me and that diploma! :) Have a great quarter everyone!!

I hope in the future to be able to travel and help out in another country.

I can imagine how excited you are about your wedding and graduation this summer they are both really meaningful moments in ones life. I am also really excited about graduation even if it means one more year for me. I can relate to your love hate relationship with Bakersfield since I was also born and raised here. I am also a pizza lover so I know what you mean when you say you can have it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner it is just delicious! Traveling to Panama to help people sounds like a great experience. It always feels good to help the less fortunate especially when it means to help improve their overall health. Well I hope you have an amazing quarter!

  21. Hello everyone,

My name is Jesus Gutierrez and I'm from Delano, CA. I'm currently in senior standing and studying Geology. I started just my early junior year with my major because I had no idea what I wanted to study. I took all of my required gen ed's and started taking random classes to see what caught my attention and Geology is the subject fascinated me the most. I hope to become a hydrologist with my degree but I will most likely end up working with an oil company.

I'm taking this online class because it work perfectly with my schedule and allows me to attend my other classes for only two times out of the week. My favorite book is 1984 by George Orwell but before that it was any Calvin and Hobbes cartoon book. My favorite food is pizza. I am one of those people that can eat pizza every single day and still love it. The farthest I've ever travelled was Spokane, Washington. It had the most beautiful scenery I've ever seen. California is a desert compared to Washington, everything is green and alive. During my winter break I did absolutely nothing beneficial for my life. I engorged myself with tamales and leftover turkey. When I wasn't eating I was sleeping or playing video games for hours. This past break was by far the best break I've ever had.

    1. Hi Jesus! I am taking science 214 this quarter which is for the most part a Geology class and i am interested to see what i can learn in it. I read 1984 in high school and it definitely was very interesting and an eye opener to society and the government. For the future i am hoping to move north for the exact same reasons why you loved Washington. My preference is more towards Oregon but i wouldn't mind Washington at all. My brother was just offered a job in Seattle and i cant wait for him to move so i will be able to visit. Have a great quarter!

    2. I've honestly haven't heard of that class but I'm its principles are the same in any geology class. I'm sure you'll awesome in Sci 214. I know for a fact Oregon is just as beautiful if not, more beautiful than Washington. Your brother must be so happy to be offered a job in Seattle. Tell him to make sure to pack a raincoat because it rains days on end in Washington.

  22. Hello Everyone ! My name is Jacqueline Guillén. I am a Child Adolescents and Family Studies major and a psychology minor. I am 22 years old and I plan to graduate next spring. I am majoring in CAFS because ever since I was in kindergarten my dream has been to become a teacher. I believe that this has been my dream because my kindergarten teacher made an impact in my life. I was enrolled in a dual immersion program as a kindergarten at Voorhies Elementary School and my teacher helped me learn to read and write in Spanish and English. I always looked up to her because she was a very understanding and patient person and I remember saying that when I grew up I wanted to be just like her. I am a traditional college student meaning that I came to college right after high school. I am also a first generation college student. I am really excited that I am almost graduating, I mean I still have a year left, but a year is nothing now compared to what I have already accomplished. During spring break I went to San Diego with my friends and we visited Sea World. They decided to take me to Sea World for my birthday weekend and I had an amazing time. I enrolled in this online course to satisfy the GWAR requirement. I am really looking forward in improving my writing with the help of this class.

I hope to graduate in the spring as well before CSUB switches to semester system. Good luck this quarter.

I have to admit that online courses scared me at first because one does not know what to expect from them, but I can agree with you that they are not bad at all. You are very lucky to have traveled to Hawaii and Cancun. I have heard that they are both very beautiful places. I hope to visit Hawaii sometime in the future. However I also visited Las Vegas in January for the very first time ever and I had an amazing time crazy, but overall an amazing time. Anyways I hope you have a great quarter !

  24. Hello Everyone!
My name is Krystle Pizano and I am 23 years old born and raised in Delano, CA. Pizano is derived from pizza, so I guess it only makes sense to be obsessed with pizza right? I'm just kidding! Well, about Pizano being derived from pizza, but it makes sense since I can eat pizza everyday and never get tired of it. I am a Liberal Studies major and aspiring to be a Special Education Teacher. I graduated Bakersfield College in 2014 with an AA in Psychology, but it wasn't until recently that I realized that I wanted to make a difference and be more hands-on with the students in the classroom. I worked for an after school program as an instructor for a 5th grade class and quickly fell in love with teaching and making a difference. I knew I wanted to be in the classroom, but I still wasn't too sure about it until I worked as an aide for a Special Education teacher this past summer and I loved it! I made a change in my major and also with my job. I am now working as an aide for a Special Education program and I changed my major from Psychology to Liberal Studies when I enrolled at CSUB fall of 2014. I'm not much of a reader but I have read some good books in the past, so if anyone wants to recommend a good book, I'm up for it! I haven't traveled very far recently, but I have traveled to Mexico and to Las Vegas, which are the farthest by far. I'm not much of a get away from California either, I get home sick very fast! But I am up for the experience if it's in my future. I am taking this course online because it fits my schedule nicely, since I'm trying to balance two jobs and being a full time student. I'm sure that this course will help me in the long run, though!
    Have a great quarter everyone!

    1. Hi Krystle! I know exactly what you mean by getting home sick too fast. When I spent an entire week in LA for a week-long TEAS review course, I stayed with a friend because I didn't want to bother with traffic. But by the third day, I absolutely could not wait to go home and sleep on my own bed that I actually considered coming home for the night. There is absolutely nothing like coming home to your own bed!

  25. My name is Jem Lim and I'm from Lancaster, CA. However, I was born and raised for the first few years of my life in Manila, Philippines before my family and I migrated to California when I was 11. After completing my GenEd in AVC, I transferred to CSUB and am majoring in Registered Nursing. Since I still primarily live in Lancaster and work in Glendale, I decided to take an online course because a commute of more than twice a week to Bakersfield would be too much.

I've always been a bit of a bookworm but the types of books I read change depending on my mood but one of my favorites is To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. The same goes for my favorite food as I'm pretty much game for anything but I really enjoy Korean food.

Aside from migrating here as a child, I recently had the chance to travel to the East Coast in August of last year. Some of my siblings and I got to travel to New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts and got to do a lot of fun, cheesy touristy things. As children, my family and I used to pack up and go on road trips. At the time, we absolutely hated it - seven kids crammed into one car sucks. But we decided last year to take a trip together because a lot of us were either in college, heading to college in a year or so. It was memorable and a lot more fun as adults but thank god, we decided to fly to New York than to make the drive since five adults crammed into one car is still no fun.

While I did not take any classes during Winter Break, I spent it working full-time and studying for my TEAS test while also incurring a large dent in my bank account thanks to Black Friday and Christmas gifts.

    1. Hi Jem, It seems like you have done your fair share of travelling as well! I have always wanted to see the Philippines. Is there a lot of ancient cultural history there? I have to agree with you on the Korean food. I absolutely love Korean BBQ and Kimchi! If you haven't been to Korea, you should definantely go. Seoul and jeju island were the best places I ever visited.

      Delete
    2. The country is definitely rich in cultural history. In fact, I would recommend going to Intramuros. It literally feels like you're traveling back in time since a lot of the buildings there have been preserved through the years as the entire city is considered to be a historical monument. For a beach outing, I would recommend Palawan rather than Boracay. Boracay is usually very tourist-centric/heavy so it can feel crowded.

Korea is definitely another one of the many places I wish to visit in the future. I know I'd be stuffing myself with good food - including Korean BBQ and Kimchi! I would really like to visit Seoul, Jeju Island, and the Korean royal palace. Did you happen to visit the royal palace?

  26. Hello, my name is Tabitha Evans. I am born and raised in Bakersfield and I am happily divorced with two cats. Currently, my majors are History and English with a minor in Human Biology. I plan on also getting a BA in Anthropology later in time. I am taking this online course as a last minute replacement after dropping the Hawks Honors theme two course on Personhood. My decision to drop the course in lieu for this online class was due to working graveyard shifts, moving, my divorce, and my dad going in for heart surgery. As for a favorite book, I do not have a specific one per say. I guess the best response would be that I enjoy mythology books, like the Homeric epics and world mythology compilations, and the Madeleine L’Engle Quintet collection that starts with A Wrinkle in Time. When it comes to food, I can be a bit more precise. I like sushi, pizza, and hamburgers. When I’m not eating that, I’m eating at Golden Ox diner, Chipotle, or cooking at home. My favorite drinks are coffee, water, green tea, and an occasional RC cola. My go to snack is a Banana, Orange, or/and some funyuns. The furthest I have travelled from home would be Japan. I had a layover there of a few days when I went to South Korea for two weeks. Last year I travelled to Cancun, Mexico for my sister’s wedding. As far as where I’ve travelled, I have been to the places mentioned above plus Germany, the Netherlands, and South America. Over the break I did nothing but work. My days blend together since I sleep when things are open and work when everything is closed. The sun is my nemesis so I try to stay out of its way so we don’t have beef.

I moved to Bakersfield when I was in 7th grade and I have been living here ever since. My major is Criminal Justice and I am minoring in Psychology. The reason I am taking an online course is because I was pregnant and I didn't want it to be difficult to be going to school most of the days in the week. I said "was" pregnant because I recently just had my baby girl on Monday March 30th. We were expecting her until April 14th, but she didn't want to wait to meet mommy and daddy. My favorite book would have to be Tuesday's with Morrie. I read it for one of my classes and it was one of those books that I just couldn't put down. I would get emotional most of the time, but this book made me appreciate even more of the loved ones we still have today. My favorite food is pizza. I can eat pizza all day everyday! The farthest I have traveled from home is to Mexico. We usually travel as a family every summer vacation but we haven't gone in 4 years. We stopped going to Mexico because of all the violence that was happening in the town that my mom is from, but people have said that its calm now. I think we will travel there soon so my family members over there can meet my baby girl. I mostly relaxed over winter break. That was time I would have morning sickness, but it was all worth it for my daughter. I love winter break though because it is the time when we always have a full house because of the holidays, especially because I come from a BIG mexican family.

  28. Hello my name is Cristina Delgadillo, I also go by Crissy. I grew up on a small ranch outside of Lamont for sixteen years before moving to southwest Bakersfield. I am a junior majoring in Human Biology with a minor in Chemistry. This will be my second quarter at CSUB; I recently graduated from Taft College with an Associate’s degree in Life Science. The reason why I am talking an online course is because I work part time at an attorney’s office. I’m grateful that my boss has allowed me to take two days off from work so I may go to school during the week. An online course fits my schedule the best. I have taken several online courses in the past and I find them easier because of the flexibility to do the work whenever I want. The only thing I struggle with is deadlines. I really need to stop procrastinating. My favorite food would have to be anything with chicken, I really like chicken tacos. I don’t really have a favorite book I enjoy reading articles on ScienceDaily. The farthest I have ever travelled from home would be to Guadalajara, Mexico to visit family, I was seven years old so I don’t really remember the trip. Over winter break I drove to Utah to visit some national parks my favorite from the trip was Zion National Park. I highly suggest going to Zion and climbing the trail that leads to Observation Point. I then drove down to Arizona and camped at the Grand Canyon.

  30. Hello, My name is Michael Wafford. I'm a seniopr communications student. I'm takign this course because it seems interesting and it fit my schedule. During spring break I spent most of my time sick, but I occasionally had to drag myself out of bed for work. My favorite book is "Sex, Drugs and Cocoa Puffs" by Chuck Klosterman. The book really showed me how fun writing could be.

  31. Hello,
My name is Jessica Espinoza and here is a little about myself, and I was born and raised in Los Angeles, CA. I am a junior here at CSUB, and I am double majoring. My major includes both Psychology and CAFS—I am still on the fence if I still want to keep my minor in Sociology. Being a double major is a little difficult, but I will try my best this quarter with the 22 units that I am taking. We have barely started this quarter—it is week one—and I am already stressing out from the workload I have received so far. I am taking this online course because this was the only available class that would fit my schedule. I have taken about four classes online, and I have liked them so far—with the exception of one, which was very disorganized and very disappointing. I like any type of food, as long as its yummy, but I would have to probably say that my most favorite food is pizza. You can never go wrong with pizza—well, so far in my 20 years of age I have not tasted a nasty pizza. The farthest that I have ever traveled was to Mexico, and that’s pretty much it. I have wanted to travel to more places that I have never been before—but only in the US. I do like going to Mexico to visit family; they are overall family. Another thing that you might want to know is that I came to Bakersfield without knowing anyone, but in the three years that I have been here at CSUB, I have met many wonderful and friendly people—aside from those few people that can be very rude, but those people exist everywhere, sadly.

  32. Hello everyone!
My name is Cristina Ramirez and this is my junior year at CSUB. I was born in Hollywood, CA and moved to Bakersfield when I was 5 years old because my parents were expecting their second child and wanted to move into a bigger house. I am a psychology major with a minor in sociology. I am thinking about declaring a second major in business, since I am almost finished with my first one. With my psychology degree, I hope to become a clinical psychologist and own my own practice someday. The reason why I am taking this online course is because I wanted to clear my schedule a bit so I could pick up extra shifts at work and also to become a better writer. I always struggle when it comes to papers, so I hope this class will help the rest of my educational career. I currently work at Mimi’s Café as a server. I have been there for over a year. I love working there with the exception of holiday’s because guests get a bit wild when they have to wait a long time to be seated. I am also a part of a sorority. I have been an active member for almost two years. I am a huge dog lover. I have a dog named Rocky. He’s been in my family for five years now and we love him dearly. I am looking to adopt a dog over the summer, but it is not set in stone yet. Over the winter break, I was working most of the time. I did turn 21 over the break and celebrated. I took a mini vacation after Christmas and before New Years. I went to Phoenix, Arizona for 4 days to visit family. After I returned, I continued to work up until winter quarter began. The farthest I have traveled is to Mexico. My parents are from Jerez, Zacatecas and they usually go every summer. I have not been able to go for the past three years, but I am planning to go in July this summer. It is one of the most beautiful places I have seen. I am excited about this quarter because it is so close to summer and I have many adventures planned. However, I need to get through this quarter first, so best of luck to you all!

    1. Hey Cristina,
When you and your family head down to Mexico what are some of the things you enjoy doing? Do you speak multiple languages?

    2. Hello Michael,
Well we spend most of our time with our family but we do enjoy sightseeing different cities. There are many ranches where people have horses, raise animals, and grow corn, chilies, beans, and plums. One of my uncles owns a taco place and we are there usually every night. The food is great down there. We ride horses, we go to rodeos, baseball games, and we dance a lot. I always have a great time! Have you ever been to Mexico? My first language was Spanish and my second language was English. I took four years of French in high school, but it I don't remember a lot. Do you speak multiple languages?

  33. Hello! My name is Marlene Juban. I am 21 years old and I was born in Delano, CA but raised in a small town called Earlimart. I have lived in Earlimart my whole life and though it is a small town, it'll always be a place where it has my heart. I am majoring in Kinesiology in hopes to become a physical therapist. I am currently at 4 years here at CSUB. The reason I am taking an online course is because it fits well with my schedule. I found that commuting to school is a hassle. Especially when you live almost an hour away. I've always been truly in love with reading the Harry Potter book series. Ever since I was a kid, I've always been hooked. Especially watching the movies. Basically any books from J.K. Rowling, i love! Other than that, I love to read books that escapes me from reality and gives me a bit of a getaway sort of thing. Fantasy is what I deeply admire. My favorite food? I love all sorts of food. Whether it is mexican, asian, american, indian, etc. But if I had to choose my all time favorite food, it would have to be my mothers home cooked meals. I am filipino, and my mom would make all sorts of filipino food which I love. One food I could never get tired of is my mother's sweet and sour chicken. This sweet and sour chicken may sound like it's sort of chinese food. The proper way of titling this particular meal would be sweet and sour chicken, but i guarantee you it's not the same as the chinese version. So instead I call this sweet and sour, i'd name it "my mothers" sweet and sour chicken. I've always loved this as a kid up until now. When it comes to traveling, to be honest, I have not traveled very far. I've never really been out of the country and the farthest out of state I have gone to would be Las Vegas and that's only because I have family there. Other than that, I've never been passed North of Sacramento and South of Los Angeles. What I did over my winter break was just training. I am a powerlifting athlete and I've competed in competitions. Over winter break all I did was train in the process of improvement. And of course spend time with the family during the holidays.

  34. Hello class. My name is Annaliza Montevirgen. I am Filipino, however I was not born or raised in Bakersfield. I was born in the Bay but raised in Germany. My major is Human Biology. ONE of my favorite books happens to be really cliché, The Notebook. I have numerous amounts of favorite books, The Notebook just happens to be the first book I could think of. My favorite food, well I am culturally diverse and happen to love all the food I have tried in the past 22 years. In Germany, I absolutely love eating snitzels (breaded pork) and bratwurst delicious, or “lecker” in the German language. In Greece, their Gyros (lamb meat with veggies in a pita bread) with tzatziki sauce are amazing. In Italy, their seafood pizza and pasta are tasty. Filipino food, I would have to say lumpia (eggrolls). Finally for America, I would have to say Popeyes chicken. The farthest I have traveled from home would have to be here in Bakersfield, California. I have traveled all around Europe, which is closest to Germany. Over Winter break, I surprised my parents in Colorado with a visit. Which was pretty great because of how happy they were to see me. As a mini vacation we went to Vail and Aspen. In Vail we toured the beautiful city. In Aspen my sister and I went skiing and snowboarding for a couple of days. On the third day my sister took a really big fall, luckily for her I was there or she would have tumbled down the mountain. She bruised her tailbone really bad so the car ride home was not too comfortable for her. For Christmas we had a party at our house, my favorite part of the party the secret Santa and when all my uncles and father started singing karaoke.

  35. Hi everyone, my name is Ivonn Medina and I am 20 years old. I was born in Delano but I was raised in Wasco. I recently chose Human Biology as my major. I have always been interested in biology and learning about the human body so I enjoy all the biology classes needed for this major. The classes I have enjoyed the most have been microbiology, physiology and nutrition. I decided to take an online course because it would give me more free time because I also work at the Rite Aid in Wasco. With an online class, I will be able to have more time whenever I don’t work. I don’t have a favorite book and I haven’t had much time to read but during the summer when I’m out of school I do get to enjoy reading several books. I recently started the Divergent series and so far it is a great book. I’m not sure if I can pick a favorite food because I love so many different dishes, but if I had to choose I would have to pick enchiladas because I can eat so many! The farthest I have traveled from home would be going to Mexico but I recently visited some family in Washington. It is so beautiful out there, my family wanted to stay! I didn’t really do anything during my spring break other than sleep in and work. For winter break I did purchase my first car, so that was very exciting!!

  36. Hello everyone, my name is Mike Medina. This is my fourth year at CSUB, and my major is in Criminal Justice. Graduating from the university is my primary goal. I only need four more classes after this quarter to graduate and I am very excited to finish this journey! I have lived in Bakersfield my whole life, but I was born in West Covina. I am taking an online course because it fits in nicely with this quarter. I was a late add in due to me dropping out of a senior seminar class. The reasoning behind that was because there were students on the waitlist who were going to graduate in the Spring quarter, while I would most likely graduate in the Fall quarter. I would hate to have been in their situations, so I was more than happy to give up my seat for one of them. I do not have a “favorite book.” The last time I ever fully read a book was back in high school. My preference to reading anything would be newspaper articles. I love food! I don’t think I can say what my favorite food is. I enjoy eating chicken, hamburgers, steak, etc. I can eat almost anything and enjoy it. I hate Chinese food because it makes me feel bloated and sick after. The farthest I have ever traveled was some time in the summer last year. My mother, fiancé, and little brother made plans to take a four day vacation to Las Vegas. I was the one that ended up driving all the way to our destination, and all the way back home. This was the first time I ever had to drive such a far distance. At the end of the day, I really enjoyed the drive.I may sound boring, but one of the things I enjoy doing is working out at the gym. That was the only thing I did for the whole winter break. I had a lot of fun exercising because I could finally relax and enjoy my time for a week.

  37. Hello,

My name is Danelle Ross. I am a thirty one year old woman and do not have any children. I am a transfer student from the Hanford, California area and my major is Sociology. I am totally blind and I will be completing this course utilizing a screen reader software program. The name of the software is Jaws which is a program that allows a blind person to hear what is being displayed on the screen. I have been to various training institutions for the blind to gain back my independence and the challenging process has given me a positive outlook. During the winter break I attended the College of Sequoias to increase my grade point average and to keep my skills sharp. In November while on Thanksgiving break, I was invited to go to a Women’s Conference in Sacramento, California by one of my classmates. I had a wonderful time, it was amazing to listen to inspirational songs and testimonies. It was a life changing experience that I will always cherish. I chose Cal State Bakersfield to further enhance my education and personal development. Ultimately, I am seeking employment in the blind field services as a counselor because my passion is to promote blind awareness and independence. As a classmate I look forward to getting acquainted with you all and offer insightful thought provoking responses from the perspective of a blind individual. I am open to receiving all comments and hearing everyone’s responses as well. Good luck to you all!

  38. Hello Mike Medina,

Congratulations to you! I admire your determination to achieve your goal to graduate. I am sure that it took a lot of time management and sacrifices to arrive where you are now. As an ex- athlete I understand the importance of exercising for the maintenance of the body and mind, keep up the good work!
